چکیده
Abstract This is the second of three papers dealing with metal-bearing circumneutral mine drainage from inactive Rico-Argentine site located at an elevation ≈ 2740 m (9000 feet) in San Juan mountain range southwestern Colorado. paper evaluates two years treatment using a passive system that included vertical-flow engineered biotreatment cell. The collapsed St. Louis Tunnel (SLT) discharges water several sources contains elevated concentrations Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn. A demonstration-scale 114 L/min (30 gpm) gravity-flow was installed, consisting settling basin (utilizing coagulant addition to improve suspended solids efficiency), anaerobic sulfate-reducing bioreactor, and aeration cascade for effluent polishing. generally met target goals Pb. Nanophase ZnS decreased frequency meeting total Zn project goals. Unexpectedly high levels Mn removal were observed both bioreactor cascade. Large seasonal variations influent metals pH present greatest challenge managing performance.

Passive Treatment of Acid-Mine Drainage
Introduction Acidic mine drainage (AMD; also called “acid rock drainage” or “acid drainage”) is an environmental pollutant that impairs water resources in mining regions throughout the world. Where such treatment is required legally, treatment must be efficient and continual. Treatment methods are commonly divided into either “active,” meaning reliance on the addition of alkaline chemicals to n...

متن کاملThe microbiology of passive remediation technologies for mine drainage treatment
Water draining abandoned mines or mine sites is often acidic and contains relatively high concentrations of dissolved metals and sulfate. Such water (AMD) arises from the oxidative dissolution of sulfidic minerals, such as iron pyrite (FeS2), exposed by mining activities. As AMD production can occur over a very long time scale, passive remediation systems are becoming increasingly important in ...
متن کاملLong-term Performance of Passive Acid Mine Drainage Treatment Systems
State and federal reclamation programs, mining operators, and citizen-based watershed organizations have constructed hundreds of passive systems in the eastern U.S. over the past 20 years to provide reliable, low cost, low maintenance mine water treatment in remote locations. While performance has been reported for individual systems, there has not been a comprehensive evaluation of the perform...
متن کاملPreventing acid mine drainage from mine tailings
Mining activity always has high impact on its surroundings, being waste deposition the cause of multiple and complex problems to the environment. One of them is Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), causing acid water percolation through large areas in the mine site. Portugal was a prosper tungsten producer from the beginning of the XX century, having its apogee during World War II. Nowadays there are mill...
